Talent is Bullsh** and You're not Special

Talent is Bullsh** and You're not Special

There's no talent here, this is hard work

Americans believe too much in talent. We are the "Michael Jordan Generation". People think Jordan was inherently talented, but what most don't realize is that Jordan simply WORKED HARDER than anyone else. Everyone is looking for an excuse or a shortcut.

Of course she's better at that than me, it's "genetics" or raw talent. The flipside of that coin is: I'm inherently talented, reward me because I showed up and wrote some sh** on the whiteboard.

Bullsh**. They're better than you because they worked harder than you. It's tough to realize you're not special, I know, but it's true. Moreover, just showing up and thinking you're talented doesn't earn you a ribbon. You have to actually work. And if you want a ribbon, you have to work harder than anyone else.

Ideas and "whiteboarding" aren't work. That's direction finding. Thinking about a route west is not the same thing as pioneering a path through the wilds to the goldfields of California. You have to actually put in the work and take the risks. You have to actually make the arduous journey. And when you arrive, you've just begun. That's when the real work begins.

You see this constantly with musicians...the really good ones just worked harder than everybody else. Hendrix used to sleep with his guitar.

Hard working people without any special talents regularly pass up those who are talented and lazy.

To not recognize that there is such a thing as talent is borderline delusional. I wholeheartedly agree that talent alone is not the only factor to "success" but I’m going to guess it is probably in the top 2 or 3 factors... It would not matter how long or how hard I practice, I will **never** shoot hoops like MJ. It’s not a questions of hours I put in practicing or how bad I “want it”; I wish it were. I could study music with the gusto and single minded purpose of Beethoven but I will never EVER write anything even remotely as beautiful and as soulful as any of this symphonies. I could spend 10,000 times 10,000 hours and I’ll never produce a Mona Lisa, Last Supper or Madonna of the Rocks as did Di Vinci. Vince Papale was a 30 year old rookie walk-on to the Eagles try-outs in 1976. He made the team not because he worked hard but because he had talent. He was able to keep his spot on the team roster because of his raw innate talent **and** because he worked REALLY hard. Jordan, Di Vinci, Beethoven and Papale had *both* talent and drive…and the right circumstances to succeed. None of them thought they’d get the Blue Ribbon or a multi-million dollar contract for showing up but none of them god there through hard work alone either. Talent is NOT Bullsh** and sometimes, you really are special but you will not be successful without hard work.
